yes, there are many other brushes you can purchase, since you say beginner makeup kit, buy cheap brushes first, or you can use estee lauder or clinique brushes. i live overseas, so, you can look around beauty shops wherever you live 
and find brushes.
you can have as many shades as you want.
some people like to work on white color skin, some darker. but, if you want to work on every skin type/color,
then i would recommened getting every shade you can find. companies, you can do any company. i would stay away from cover girl though, it’s not good quality. stick to maybelline, estee lauder, clinique, mac, revlon, etc. but, i would start off with maybelling first, and then you can make your way up to more expensive brands and stuff.
