Lady Gaga, Usher to perform at Clinton’s concert 2011

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lady Gaga, Usher, The Edge and Bonowill be among the performers at a Los Angeles concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of former President Bill Clinton’s foundation.

The musicians will perform at “A Decade of Difference: A Concert Celebrating 10 Years of the William J. Clinton Foundation” on Oct. 15 at the Hollywood Bowl. Other performers will be announced later.

Clinton said in a statement Tuesday that he is “proud that someof today’s most influential performers are coming together to raise awareness about the work of my foundation.“

For Michelle Yeoh, “The Lady” is role of lifetime

For action star Michelle Yeoh, one of Asia’s best known actresses, the chance to play Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi posed perhaps thebiggest challenge in her nearly three-decade career, and that is exactly what she wanted.

Taking the lead role in “The Lady”, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festivalon Monday, meant the responsibility of playing one of the world’s most revered pro-democracy figures, who is still fighting for reform in her nativeMyanmar.

But it also meant finding the humanity behind Suu Kyi’s iconic image, and capturing the highs and lows of the love affair that helped sustain her through years of detention.

“I knew that this was not just the role of a lifetime, but an incredible story that really needed to be told,” Yeohsaid at a press conference in Toronto on Monday.

“I lived and breathed her for the past four years. Every day. Every night. I learned Burmese. I slept with her. Iwoke up with her. Because it was necessary … (to) allow you to come into her world.”

Directed by France’s Luc Besson, also known for action films like “La Femme Nikita” and “The Fifth Element”, “The Lady” follows Suu Kyi starting in 1988 when she returned to Myanmar, formerly Burma, to care for her ailing mother.

But as the daughter of slain independence hero General Aung San, the charismatic Oxford graduate soonbecame the figurehead for the country’s fight against the military dictatorship.

While Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won the 1990 election by a landslide, the military nullified the results and refused to hand over power. Suu Kyi spent 15 years in detention under house arrest for spearheading the campaign.

Covering events up to 2007, “The Lady” centers on one of the lesser known aspects of the 66 year-old Suu Kyi’s life: her marriage to British academic Michael Aris and their two kids.

Aris, an Oxford professor, never wavered in supporting Suu Kyi’s decision to stay in Myanmar, raising theirchildren and playing a key behind-the-scenes role in campaigning for her Nobel Peace Prize. But this choice, which meant years of separation, exacted a huge personal toll on them both.

The relationship took an even more tragic turn when Aris was diagnosed with cancer and denied a visa to visit Suu Kyi a final time. He died in 1999.

“The story was just so moving, because we know more about the political side and the problems they had, but we don’t know about this incredible love story, this soulmate that she had who did everything possible to ensure her safety,” said Yeoh.

“When you love someone you don’t try to change them. And I think he knew what she was about.”

TURNING POINT FOR YEOH

The role marks a huge shift from Yeoh’s early career as a star of Hong Kong action films alongside Jackie Chan, when the former Miss Malaysia famously performed many of her own stunts. She came to the attention of Western audiences as a Bond girl in 1997 movie “Tomorrow Never Dies”, as well as films like director Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”.

For “The Lady”, Yeoh dove into research about Suu Kyi and even managed to visit her briefly in Myanmar during the production. Initially so in awe she could barely speak, Yeoh said Suu Kyi quickly put her at ease.

“We never spoke about the film. I think it was conscious, on my part, on both our parts, because in no way would we want to put her in danger in case they turn around and say ‘how could you be giving informationlike that?’,” Yeoh said.

The film received a standing ovation and cheers at its gala premiere in Toronto on Monday, where Yeoh mixed with fans and Suu Kyi supporters on the red carpet. But early reviews of the movie have been less than positive.

The Hollywood Reporter said it was a “well-intentioned but pedestrian retelling of a stirring true story”, while the Guardian said the film “says so little about its subject, it would struggle to pass muster as a TV biopic.”

Suu Kyi was released in November 2010 when her latest stint of house arrest expired after elections widely criticized as a sham, since the army made sure it dominated parliament.

With Western countries insisting embargoes against the Myanmar government remain in place until an estimated 2,100 political prisoners are released, cast members said they hope the movie will raise awareness.

“There’s so much else going on in the world and the Burmese struggle is in danger of being forgotten. So I hope this film will just bring it up into the spotlight a little more,” said British actor David Thewlis, who portrays Aris.

British pop artist Richard Hamilton dies at 89

British Pop Art pioneer Richard Hamilton, who depicted Tony Blair as a cowboy and designed a Beatles album cover, has died. He was 89.

The Gagosian Gallery, which represents Hamilton, said the artist died early Tuesday at an undisclosed location in Britain. It did not give thecause of death.

The gallery said that with his death, “the art world has lost one of its leading figures.” It said Hamilton’s influence on younger artists was“immeasurable.”

Hamilton was often called the “Father of Pop Art” — Britain’s answer to Andy Warhol — and was credited with coining the name for amovement marked by its ironic and iconic use of commercial andpop-culture imagery.

Born in London in 1922, Hamilton studied at the Royal Academy Schools and the Slade School of Fine Art, and made his name in the 50s with “Just What Is It That Makes Today’s Homes So Different, So Appealing?” A collage showing a physically idealized naked couple — the man holding a red lollipop marked “Pop” — in a product-strewn home, it was a seminal work of Pop Art.

For half a century Hamilton produced images that were striking and often political, from Mick Jagger in handcuffs after a drug raid to portraits of prison protesters in Northern Ireland to an image of former Britishleader Blair as a cowboy in a 2007 piece entitled “Shock and Awe.”

One of his best-known works is the antithesis of Pop Art’s colorful cacophony: the monochrome cover of The Beatles’ “White Album,” a simple white square embossed with the band’s name. Hamilton also designed the collage-style poster that came with the album.

In an interview last year with The Guardian newspaper, Hamilton said he was “surprised how little” he was paid for the cover — only 200 pounds.

“I thought that was a bit mean,” he said.

Hamilton also worked for decades on a mammoth project to illustrate James Joyce’s novel “Ulysses.”

He told The Guardian that acclaim had come because “I’ve lived longer than all my peers.” But others saw him as a major artistic figure.

Tate director Nicholas Serota said Hamilton was “one of the most influential and distinctive artists of the postwar period.”

“Greatly admired by his peers, including (Andy) Warhol and (Joseph) Beuys, Hamilton produced a series of exquisite paintings, drawings, prints and multiples dealing with themes of glamor, consumption, commodity and popular culture,” Serota said.

Hamilton’s work has been shown around the world, with pieces in major collections including New York’s Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Modern Art and Britain’s Tate galleries.

The Gagosian gallery said that until a few days ago Hamilton had been working on a major retrospective that will travel to Los Angeles, Philadelphia, London and Madrid in 2013-14.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Donagh, and son Rod. Funeral details were not immediately available.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — If any new role last TV seasonscreamed “Emmy!” it was nominated actress Margo Martindale’s Mags Bennett on the FX crime drama “Justified.“

On one hand, Mags was an apple-pie baking mama withunconditional love for her children. On the other, she was perhaps themost menacing, maniacal mob matriarch to come along this side of the late Nancy Marchand’s legendary twisted sister, Livia Soprano.

Yet Mags wasn’t really a stretch for veteran Martindale (“Million Dollar Baby,” ”Secretariat”), a Tony-nominated character actress who mostly has played parts like her true self: a sweet Southern gal with a touch of class — and sass.

“(Mags) came so easily to me that it was scary,” noted Martindale in a recent interview. “It fit me like a glove. I felt at home, like a child again. Now, that sounds insane. But it felt like play-acting in my backyard: cowboys and Indians, you know?”

Among the many atrocities Mags committed onscreen: punishing her own son by pulverizing one of his hands with a hammer. When Martindale would head home after shooting, “I was so much nicer because I was completely satisfied,” she joked.

Mags got hers by the end of her one and only season on the series. (She poisoned herself before Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, played by star Timothy Olyphant, could get to her.) Problem was, the powers that be at “Justified” never let Martindale know Mags was going to be killed off until after Martindale read her final script.

“Graham (series creator Graham Yost) had called everybody that was being killed,” recalled Martindale. “And he called (costar) Linda Gehringer. He called (costar) Brad Henkey. And when I got my script, I go, ‘Oh, OK.’ And then somebody ran to the phone and said, ‘You forgot to call Margo.’ I will never let him live it down. He’sapologized so much, but anyway.”

But don’t cry for the 60-year-old Martindale, who quickly landed a key role on CBS’s new supernatural medical drama “A Gifted Man.” ”I am back to being a supporting character to a beautiful man, who is fantastic, Patrick Wilson,” Martindale said.

She has segued from one hunk to another. “Well, Timothy is slim-hipped, and long and lean, which is making my mouth water right now. So I better watch out. Patrick has that all-American, Texas kind of football-captain sort of thing, which of course, has always been my style. On the other hand, Timothy is really beautiful in an exotic way.”

In other words, we would not kick either of them out of bed, would we?

“No,” Martindale replied, laughing. “We would not.”

The Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented Sunday in Los Angeles.
