Garbo: The Spy profiles the enigmatic counterspy Spaniard Juan Pujol Garcia, the only person to have been decorated by both the Allies and the Axis for service during the Second World War. Code-namedGarbo” by British intelligence and dubbed “Alaric” by the Nazis, this self-made double agent earned recognition after taking it upon himself to fabricate a network of phantom agents across Europe and feeding false information to the Nazis. As a result, Pujol contributed to saving thousands of lives for both sides, most notably by misinforming the Germans about the timing and location of the Normandy invasion. This documentary thriller artfully interweaves fragments of World War II propaganda footage, interviews with key players in Pujol’s life, and clips from Hollywood films to conjure

forgotten and living memories, heroes and spies, secrets and lies.

Rid of Me Movie 2011 Review

Rid of Me Review:-

With Rid of Me, writer/director James Westby gives us a lightweight dark comedy about an insecure young woman named Meris (Katie O’Grady) in a mismatched marriage to a cheeseball perfectly named Mitch (John Keyser). Both Meris and the marriage rapidly unravel when the couple moves to Mitch’s hometown in Oregon. Meris doesn’t quite mesh (to put it mildly) with Mitch’s group of high school cheeseball friends; from the moment they walk into a surprise welcome home party thrown by the friends, it’s clear Meris is experiencing a military ambush rather than a supposedly fun gathering.

watch rid-of-me-movie-poster-2011But the film isn’t designed to explore beneath the glossy fable of extremes. How else are we to understand the caricatured douchiness of Mitch’s friends, a bunch of vapid, exceedingly preppy people who make racist jokes and seem to have the combined IQ and sensitivity of one amoeba? Or what about Mitch’s being married to Meris in the first place? Sure, Meris is something of a zero herself, but she does seem to be in possession of a much broader worldview (that of course complements her more hipster-leaning wardrobe). With scant explanation and few details of their courtship — they apparently eloped; Mitch had shaggy hair in an old photo instead of the close-cropped cut he now sports — the chemistry of the characters just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense

Westby instead forces us to focus on the style and local details of this standard tale of romantic rejection and humiliation that, yes, gives way to liberation and self-discovery. And indeed, the fun there is to be had is in these details: post-dumping, Meris joins ranks with a couple misfits behind the counter of a candy shop and becomes friends with a group of punks who range from anarchic to plain disgusting (one can puke on command and — spoiler alert — does). The comedy itself certainly doesn’t coddle the audience; it simply delivers cringe-inducing realities on an un-garnished plate. In a classic “I’m not over you” setback, both Meris and Mitch show up to the same karaoke joint with their respective posses. After much liquor and encouragement, a heavily eyeliner’d Meris gets on stage. Of course, we expect some kind of “I Will Survive” anthem, but Meris instead screeches out a weepy love ballad, looks right at Mitch and his new girl, and squeaks, “I thought what we had was really special, but good for you guys.” It’s deliciously horrifying.

It doesn’t help that, in portraying Meris’ often unstable mental state, Rid of Meemploys a very obtrusive soundtrack and worked-over montages that are sometimes revealing but mostly just grating. The film is like a strange-flavored taffy you’ll unwrap one night and savor for a minute, before realizing that not only will the enjoyment pass quickly, but perhaps it was the wrong choice to begin with.

A true-life tale of espionage so brazen and crucial to World War II’s outcome one marvels that it isn’t better known, Edmon Roch‘s Garbo the Spy introduces viewers to a Spaniard who worked for the Brits while pretending to be a fervent supporter of the Nazi war effort. Solidly made but without much theatrical appeal, the doc should find a comfortable home on video.

garbo the spy website updates and watch onlineCode-named Garbo because he was viewed by handlers as “the greatest actor in the world,” Juan Pujol García began as a “freelance spy,” introducing himself to Axis forces only to feed them intel that was totally fabricated — a feat whose dexterity is more impressive in light of García’s earlier incompetence while trying to avoid the Spanish Civil War.

Once he officially joined the British war effort as a double agent, Garbo’s operation grew incredibly — to a network of innumerable “sources,” all fictional, whose tips he fed to the Nazis. Elaborate lies were mixed with just enough truth to be plausible, a strategy that had its greatest success at Normandy, when Garbo convinced Germany that troops preparing to invade were actually a diversionary force, the real attack point being elsewhere.

Lacking any contemporary footage of García and only one or two photos, Roch relies on a combination of talking heads (an aged spy, a journalist, the investigative writer who pieced together Garbo’s identity four decades after it was hidden) and a great deal of film from both vintage newsreels and fictional war pics.

His reliance on clips from movies like Our Man in Havana backfires, though, forcing viewers to consider how much more enjoyable a fictional treatment of this story would be. Despite a few colorful anecdotes (for example: when García allowed one of his imaginary sources to “die,” his also fictional wife received a pension honoring his service), the blow-by-blow of García’s exploits never comes to life, and we get no sense at all of him as a person or of what made him such a virtuosic fabulist.

On occasion (especially in opening half-hour), Roch’s enthusiasm for found footage is such that he appears to be padding what should have been a much shorter doc into feature length; his sometimes off-putting choices of contemporary pop music for the soundtrack similarly try too hard. Use of motion graphics is tastefully restrained, however, and if the information is sometimes dry Garbo’s photography and crisp style are always a pleasure to watch.
