(AP) WARSAW, Poland — She was a coloratura soprano who spurned opera for popular music, a Polish singer who became a caberet star in Las Vegas, an artist trapped for years behind the Iron Curtain when she flew home to tend to her dying mother.

Singer Violetta Villas, 73, died late Monday at her home in Lewin Klodzki, a village in southern Poland, local police spokesman Pawel Petrykowski told The Associated Press. Prosecutors have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death, he said Tuesday.

Villas was born Czeslawa Cieslak in 1938 to a Polish coal miner’s family in Belgium.

Elton John in tirade against AIDS stigma

British pop superstar Elton John has lashed out at those who continue to stigmatize AIDS as “fascists and idiots”, and called on governments to keep funding the fight against the disease.

John, in Sydney to mark World AIDS Day, said the battle was being won but warned it would be a mistake for governments to let their guard down, with UN figures showing some 34 million people living with HIV/AIDS in 2010.

“We’ve got this disease really by the scruff of the neck,” he told a crowd at Circular Quay late Thursday, Australian Associated Press reported.

“But we cannot loosen that grip we have on it. If governments start backing out and stop funding, then the epidemic will start to balloon again.”

John, who is married to his male partner David Furnish, said the world needed to “fight a new war, to get the funding necessary to actually kill the disease once and for all”.

FHM editor says Veena’s nude shoot authentic

MUMBAI: Neck-deep in controversy, Actress Veena Malik Friday emphatically denied laying herself bare for an Indian magazine as well as sporting an acronym reading ‘ISI’ tattooed on her arm, while the magazine editor insists the shoot was for real, on Media reported.

The December issue of FHM India flashed Veena in the buff on its cover, which triggering an outrage in Pakistan – both for her nudity and the reference to country’s geointelligence agency.

Following the controversy Veena voiced a negation of her posing for the FHM, categorically saying the picture was ‘morphed’.

‘I have never posed nude. I have never done anything like that ever. My manager and legal team are looking into the matter.

We will take legal action against them,’ Veena told media.

On the other hand vowing to prove the photo’s authenticity FHM India’s editor, Kabeer Sharma, told media News said that they had not photoshopped or morphed her image adding it was for real.

“No one can hold anything against the FHM as the girl on the cover page was Veena Malik and she can’t deny it”, said Sharma.

“We have video footage of the shoot as well as emails from Veena about how she’s looking forward to the cover,” Kabeer said.

“We have nothing to do with this controversy”, added he.
He said to us it was a workaday shoot –business as usual.

Replying to a question, he said the ISI tattoo idea was mine but it was Veena who pressed us to make it look like as it appeared on the cover.

He said that the image was intended to be playful, saying that: “In India we joke about this… if anything goes wrong… we say the ISI must be behind this.”

The Battle of Karbala took place on Muharram 10, in the year 61 of the Islamic calendar^[2] (October 10, 680)^[5]^[6] in Karbala, in present day Iraq.

On one side of the highly uneven battle were a small group of supporters and relatives of Muhammad‘s grandson Husain ibn Ali, and on the other was a large military detachment from the forces of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph, whom Husain had refused to recognise as caliph.

Husain and all his supporters were killed, including Husain’s six months old infant son , and the women and children were taken as prisoners.

The dead are regarded as martyrs by Muslims, and the battle has a central place in Islamic history and tradition with particular emphasis in the faith , and has frequently been recounted in Shi’ahIslamic literature.
