BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — If any new role last TV seasonscreamed “Emmy!” it was nominated actress Margo Martindale’s Mags Bennett on the FX crime drama “Justified.“
On one hand, Mags was an apple-pie baking mama withunconditional love for her children. On the other, she was perhaps themost menacing, maniacal mob matriarch to come along this side of the late Nancy Marchand’s legendary twisted sister, Livia Soprano.
Yet Mags wasn’t really a stretch for veteran Martindale (“Million Dollar Baby,” ”Secretariat”), a Tony-nominated character actress who mostly has played parts like her true self: a sweet Southern gal with a touch of class — and sass.
“(Mags) came so easily to me that it was scary,” noted Martindale in a recent interview. “It fit me like a glove. I felt at home, like a child again. Now, that sounds insane. But it felt like play-acting in my backyard: cowboys and Indians, you know?”
Among the many atrocities Mags committed onscreen: punishing her own son by pulverizing one of his hands with a hammer. When Martindale would head home after shooting, “I was so much nicer because I was completely satisfied,” she joked.
Mags got hers by the end of her one and only season on the series. (She poisoned herself before Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, played by star Timothy Olyphant, could get to her.) Problem was, the powers that be at “Justified” never let Martindale know Mags was going to be killed off until after Martindale read her final script.
“Graham (series creator Graham Yost) had called everybody that was being killed,” recalled Martindale. “And he called (costar) Linda Gehringer. He called (costar) Brad Henkey. And when I got my script, I go, ‘Oh, OK.’ And then somebody ran to the phone and said, ‘You forgot to call Margo.’ I will never let him live it down. He’sapologized so much, but anyway.”
But don’t cry for the 60-year-old Martindale, who quickly landed a key role on CBS’s new supernatural medical drama “A Gifted Man.” ”I am back to being a supporting character to a beautiful man, who is fantastic, Patrick Wilson,” Martindale said.
She has segued from one hunk to another. “Well, Timothy is slim-hipped, and long and lean, which is making my mouth water right now. So I better watch out. Patrick has that all-American, Texas kind of football-captain sort of thing, which of course, has always been my style. On the other hand, Timothy is really beautiful in an exotic way.”
In other words, we would not kick either of them out of bed, would we?
“No,” Martindale replied, laughing. “We would not.”
The Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented Sunday in Los Angeles.

Clooney ex Elisabetta Canalis gets naked for PETA 2011
George Clooney’s ex-girlfriend Elisabetta Canalisis the latest celebrity to strip down for animal rights group PETA, unveiling her campaign and her naked body in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.
Shoppers on ritzy Rodeo Drive got an eyeful of Canalis as she posed next to her nude, black-and-white campaign portrait for People for theEthical Treatment of Animals.
The Italian TV host, who split from A-list actor Clooney earlier this year, has long been against the use of fur. Her campaign will be shown prominently in Milan, where designers are still known to use fur in their collections.
“This is a thing which I personally believe and trust in, so nobody told me to do it. Since I was a little kid, I was against fur, I never wore fur in my life,” she told Reuters.
Canalis, 33, joins a long list of Hollywood celebrities who bared it all for PETA's anti-fur campaign, including Charlize Theron and Pamela Anderson.
The Italian beauty said she was moved to work on the campaign after hearing of the immense cruelty suffered by animals in the fur trade.
“If you know what happens all around the world, everyday, like, 50,000 – more than that — animals are killed, bludgeoned, drowned, electrocuted, skinned alive, just for vanity. That’s enough I think,” said Canalis.
The model is stepping away from her famous ex-boyfriend’s spotlight and into her own, with an upcoming stint on U.S. reality TV show “Dancing With The Stars.” Canalis is training hard with dance partner Val Chmerkovskiy, in preparation for the live show, which premieres on ABC on September 19.
“At the beginning, I thought, this is a very famous TV program in United States (and) I’m very happy they asked me to do it. But now, I’m realizing that it’s a lot of work because me and Val, we are working tougheveryday, six hours, it’s like an athlete training, so I was not really used to doing it,” said Canalis. “But I’m so excited to do it.”
Canalis will be featured in PETA’s fall “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign, which will be appearing in advertisements and on billboards worldwide.

Angola’s Leila Lopes crowned Miss Universe 2011
Miss Angola Leila Lopes on Tuesday was crowned Miss Universe 2011 in a star-studded ceremony in Brazil’s Sao Paolo. India’s hopes were dashed early into the competition’s final rounds after contestant Vasuki
Sunkavalli failed to make it to the top 10.
The 25-year-old Lopes is Angola’s first winner. She beat out 88 other competitors to win the title during the 60th anniversary of the world’s biggest beauty pageant. She replaces last year’s winner, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.
“Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing,” Lopes said when asked her interview question. “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”
China’s Luo Zilin came in fourth, Philippines’ Shamcey Supsup was third, Brazil’s Priscila Machado second and Ukraine’s Olesia Stefanko was picked first runners up.
Vasuki, a 26-year-old from Hyderabad, representing India at the pageant in Brazil this year. She is a lawyer by profession. She was crowned I Am She – Miss Universe India on July 15, 2011 in Mumbai.
Vasuki is also a state level basketball playerand a trained dancer. After the top 10 list of finalists was announced Vasuki tweeted “sorry. if I upset many. I did give it my best shot. may the most deserving girl win..”
In the top 10 were Australia, Costa Rica, France, Ukraine, Portugal, Panama, Philippines, Angola, China and Brazil.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the pageant that has always picked out the most beautiful of women, matching brains with poise and grace.
This year, the event was held at the Credicard Hall, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Miss Universe 2010 – Ximena Navarrete of Mexico will be passing her crown on to the next beauty.
Contestants from 89 nations on six continents spent the past three weeks in Sao Paulo, trying to learn samba dance steps, visiting impoverished children and kicking a football around for cameras as the globe’s biggest beauty contest is held in Brazil for the first time.
“It was well deserved, we were cheering for her all along,” said 36-year-old Sao Paulo resident Carolina Rocha, a fan who attended the event. “Her smile and her friendliness was what set her apart from the others. She also answered her question very well, that likely helped her a lot.”
Before the contest began, judges offered little insight into who they thought might win.
“I know my job and I’ll be tough, but fair,” said pageant judge and journalist Connie Chung. “You have to keep in mind that these women are not objects just to be looked at. They’re to be taken seriously. I want to choose somebody I take seriously and the world takes seriously, too.”
Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe organization, was hyped for the night.
“It’s our 60th anniversary, it’s a very big show,” she said. “We’re anticipating close to a billion viewers from around the world.”
Shugart said it was fitting the globe’s biggest beauty pageant be held in Brazil at this time, as the nation prepares to host some major events in the coming years.
“I don’t think there is any doubt in the rest of the world’s mind that Brazil is the place, between hosting the Olympics and hosting the World Cup,” she said. “I love the fact we’re going to kick it off. I always say we’re the ‘World Cup’ of beauty.”
The contestants, who must never have been married or had children and who must be at least 18 years of age and under 27 years of age by Feb. 1 of the competition year.
The pageant, hosted by NBC “Today” anchor Natalie Morales and the Bravo network’s Andy Cohen, will air live on NBC and be distributed to about 170 countries. The contest is co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC, and will be judged by celebrities including Connie Chung, supermodel Isabeli Fontana and Indy race car driver Helio Castroneves.
Morales, who is half Brazilian, said that “what’s most important is for the women to be beautiful inside and out.”
For Cohen, the task of hosting is an easy one.
“It’s a fun job. All I have to do is stand there, smile and scream the names of countries,” he said.
Sharply dressed women and men were jostling for chances to have their photos taken with stars on the red carpet. Some traveled from across the globe to support contestants.
Jehona Dreshaj, 17, arrived from Kosovo to cheer on her sister, Aferdita Dreshaj, who is representing the European country.
“It doesn’t really matter the outcome, she is already a winner in our eye and we are so proud of her,” she said. “This has been an incredible experience for her and for all of us. It’s great for her to be representing our country in an event like this”
There have been no headline-grabbing gaffes going into this year’s competition, as opposed to past years that have seen controversies of various stripes. The show itself went off without a hitch.
Some of the contestants have complained to the local news media about the size of bikinis used in some photo shoots, with Miss Mexico Karin Ontiveros saying they were “very small.”
That was enough to draw chuckles in Brazil, where women from all walks of life, not just beauty queens, sport barely there swimwear on beaches throughout the country.
Miss USA Alyssa Campanella, from California, will be trying to end a long losing spell for the US in the competition. An American has not been named Miss Universe since Brook Lee won the title in 1997.
The pageant started as a local bathing suit revue in Long Beach, California, organized by a swimwear company.
