Bollywood again smoking ban “TV Stars”

Smoking is injurious to health, a phrase that can never be said enough and yet we have a plethora of people take up smoking every year. Well the government post banning smoking in public areas has now decided to apply stringent norms to smoking on screen as well.

According to the new norm starting November 14, 2011, no TV show or film will be allowed to feature any on screen tobacco product freely, unless it has strong requirement within the editorial and each of the concerned actors issues a 20 second spot condoning the act, while running spots before and mid way through the program about the hazards. Besides these, there will also have to be a strong anti-tobacco health warning as a prominent scroll at the bottom of the screen during the period of such smoking scene.

To ensure proper enforcement of the new norm the government has decided to place a representative of the health ministry in the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to monitor such scenes, while films with heavy use of tobacco products are likely to get “A” certificate.

I’m continuing my 2011 resolution of not watching trailers for films I’m really looking forward to, but for the less ascetic among you, here’s our first glimpse of Lars von Trier’s latest, which will doubtless turn up in next month’s Cannes lineup. As many of you know, I’m always in the tank for von Trier — I was firmly on the“pro” side of the “Antichrist” debate two years ago — and with that fascinatingly eclectic cast on board, including a second go-round for Charlotte Gainsbourg, I scarcely need to see any footage to put this atop my “most anticipated” list. • The Conquest Movie Review:-

Plenty of movies have been made about famous politicians out of office, but films about leaders still in office are few. “The Conquest,” which the filmmakers are careful to point out is partially fictionalized, is a Gallic film about current French President Nicolas Sarkozy (Denis Podalydès).

Co-writer and director Xavier Durringer proceeds from the not unreasonable premise that politics and show business are part of the same continuum. Like movie stars, politicians have their entourages, their lawyers, even their makeup artists. Glamorized by power, they play out their lives on a world stage.

“The Conquest,” which is fairly entertaining in a hyped-up docudrama sort of way, regards Sarkozy as a thoroughgoing political animal. The film follows his life between the reelection of previous center-right President Jacques Chirac (Bernard Le Coq) in 2002 and Sarkozy’s election as his successor in 2007. Sarkozy’s ascent is so monomaniacal it’s comic (except, of course, for those who get in his way). He is nothing if not blunt. He makes his presidential aspirations known early on to Chirac; to dapper Dominic de Villepin (Samuel Labathe), Chirac’s handpicked successor-in-waiting, he says: “You’re a dead man.” The only person Sarkozy appears to be cowed by is his wife, Cécilia (Florence Pernel), also one of his advisers. When she leaves him for another man, an advertising executive no less, he is crestfallen not only because he craves her company but even more because it doesn’t look good for a presidential aspirant to be wifeless. Of course, even here, we are made to feel that Sarkozy doesn’t have it so bad – waiting in the wings is Carla Bruni.

Durringer has a good sense of pacing, and he keeps the various interlocking machinations reasonably comprehensible even for those of us who aren’t experts in French political intrigue. Podalydès manages to vary Sarkozy’s outbursts enough to keep him from becoming a ranting boor.

Still, I prefer a bit more drama in my political docudramas. “The Conquest” never really breaks out of its genre in the way that, say, “The Queen” or “Il Divo” or the more fictionalized “In the Loop” did. It’s an evenhanded movie about a politician, and a political landscape, that would have been more suitably served with a more outré style.

Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by giving Jackson the anesthetic propofol – normally used to sedate patients for surgery – that was deemed the main cause of the singer’s death.

The 58-year-old faces up to four years in prison and the loss of his medical licence following the conviction. He had pleaded not guilty.

Mother and children allege that the entertainment giant heartlessly pressured the star to deliver a comeback tour he was in no shape to take on.

With the conviction this week of Michael Jackson’s doctor on an involuntary manslaughter charge, the question of blame in the pop star’s death shifts to a new and much wealthier defendant: Los Angeles entertainment behemoth Anschutz Entertainment Group.

The conclusion of the criminal case sets the stage for proceedings in civil court, where the pop star’s mother and children are pressing a wrongful death suit against the corporation and its concert subsidiary, AEG Live, the promoter of Jackson’s doomed comeback attempt.

The civil case, set for trial in September, pits the singer’s three children and elderly mother against one of the city’s most important companies at a time when AEG is pitching controversial plans for a downtown football stadium.

FULL COVERAGE: The trial of Dr. Conrad Murray

The case involves many of the same issues as the criminal trial: propofol, Jackson’s performance anxiety and the medical choices of Dr. Conrad Murray.

But the proceedings are expected to delve into areas the criminal judge barred as irrelevant to Murray’s role, including Jackson’s finances and years of drug problems.

“The conviction of Dr. Murray is just the beginning of bringing forth the truth on what happened to Michael Jackson,” said Brian Panish, an attorney for the Jackson family. “Forces much larger than Dr. Murray were involved in this tragedy.”

Lawyers for the Jacksons, who are seeking an unspecified amount of money, have portrayed AEG in court papers as a heartless, bottom-line-driven business that contributed to the singer’s death by pressuring him to prepare for performances he wasn’t physically capable of pulling off. That pressure, they have written, pushed him toward Murray and the nightly use of propofol, a surgical anesthetic, for his insomnia.

“AEG said that if they called off the Tour, there would be lawsuits and Jackson’s career would be over. They said Jackson must work with Murray,” the Jacksons’ lawyers wrote in a complaint last year.

AEG has denied the allegations in court filings, with its lawyers saying the company “in no way actually controlled” the singer.

“Michael Jackson was not helpless or incompetent; he lived in his own home, negotiated his own contracts, engaged his own attorneys, and cared for his own family,” lawyers for the company wrote. “He at all times retained the option of refusing Dr. Murray’s services, or of canceling his agreement with AEG.”

The company’s concern with the civil matter was on display at Murray’s trial. The lead attorney for AEG in the wrongful death suit, Marvin Putnam, sat in the well of the court facing the witness box as three company officials testified.

Each of them told jurors that the company had no indication that Murray was anything but a competent physician, with his famous patient’s best interests at heart.

“Dr. Murray told me repeatedly that Michael Jackson was perfectly healthy, in excellent condition,” said Kathy Jorrie, a lawyer who helped draft Murray’s $150,000-a-month contract.

Murray is not named in the suit filed by Katherine Jackson and her grandchildren, although he is named in a separate claim by the singer’s father.

A lawyer for Katherine Jackson and her grandchildren said the choice not to sue the doctor reflected the family’s belief that AEG bore primary responsibility.

“We believe the evidence shows that there is much more involvement from AEG, and that Murray’s a minor player,” Panish said.

Other legal experts saw a different calculus.

“He’s got no money,” said Loyola Law School professor Stan Goldman of the heavily indebted physician. It was smart strategy, he said, to keep Murray away from civil jurors: “Keep the focus on the deep pockets.”

LONDON—Miss Venezuela, Ivian Sarcos, was crowned the 2011 winner of the Miss World beauty pageant on Sunday at a glittering final ceremony in London.

Wearing a pink dress with diamante studs that had giant frills slashed below the waist, the 22-year-old threw her hands to her face as she was announced the winner.

Last year’s Miss World, Alexandria Mills of the United States, placed the sparkling crown on her successor’s head.

“I believe that the next Miss World should be a woman of responsibility and reason,” Sarcos said before winning the title.

“I believe the woman should be committed to the organization and help people in need. Beauty with a heart”, added the Venezuelan, who works for a broadcasting company and has a degree in human resources.

Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Ruais, was named the runner-up, while Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Perez, came third in the contest, which was back in its home city to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Some 113 beauty queens from Albania to Zimbabwe took their place on the stage, with the show being broadcast live to an estimated audience of more than one billion viewers in 150 countries.

Around 50 feminists staged a demonstration outside, waving placards reading “Objectification won’t achieve world peace”, “Being a woman is not a competition” and “Sexism is pretty ugly”.

Around a half dozen were veterans of the 1970 pageant protest, which caused a major disturbance.

Inside the Earls Court Two auditorium in west London, the few thousand fans cheered, waved national flags and shouted for their favorites.

To whittle them down to the 15 semi-finalists, several point-scoring rounds were held during the contestants’ tour of Britain over the previous two weeks, with the results revealed on stage.

With the scores in and only the top 15 going through to the semi-final, Miss Puerto Rico topped the leaderboard, ahead of Miss Venezuela, Miss Philippines, Miss Ukraine and Miss Scotland.

The final seven, chosen by the judges, were Miss England, Miss Korea, Miss Philippines, Miss Puerto Rico, Miss Scotland, Miss South Africa and Miss Venezuela.

It was announced that Ordos in Inner Mongolia, China, will host the 2012 competition.
